Microsoft Email Administrators Guide

There are a few things you can do to make sure your organization gets the best out of Nylas.

General Settings

These settings apply no matter which setup you are using.

  • We recommend using Modern Authentication or OAuth for all accounts.
  • Users can not use an alias to sign in.
  • If the email account requires 2FA, then the user needs to use the app password to sign in.
  • Review Suggested Office 365 Settings.

Office 365

  • If you are using Basic authentication and your app passwords are not enabled,Nylas will not work. You can either:
    • Either enable app passwords
    • Enable Modern or OAuth authentication. Then set up OAuth for Office 365. Follow the steps in Create an Azure App.
  • If the account is only accessible using a corporate network, VPN, or firewall in place, you must give Nylas a way to connect.
  • During development, you might be asked to approve the Azure app if using OAuth or Modern Authentication.
  • Allowlist Nylas IPs if needed. You can get a list of current IP addresses from our API. These IP addresses can change at any time.
  • Nylas is not able to sync users who are in admin groups. This is a Microsoft limitation.

Exchange

Microsoft will be deprecating Basic Authentication support for all Exchange Online accounts as of October 1, 2022.

Learn more through our Microsoft Exchange Online and Basic Auth Changes guide.

  • Set up Microsoft Exchange Login.
  • If the account is only accessible using a corporate network, VPN, or firewall in place, you must give Nylas a way to connect.
  • Make sure Exchange ActiveSync is enabled outside the corporate network and check the quarantine list for any Nylas connections.
  • Turn on EWS. EWS must be visible outside the corporate network and enabled for the individual mailbox.
  • If your application needs contacts, you need to use EAS.Make sure the contacts scope for both Nylas and Azure is enabled.
  • If auto-discovery is available, we will attempt to use it. Otherwise, you’ll need to provide all the settings.
    • If a user is asked for server settings, then we were not able to use auto-discovery.
  • We use Exchange Web Services for email and calendar sync. Your customers must have this turned. If that is not enabled, try to get them to get it enabled. If they are unwilling let us know and we can force it to use ActiveSync instead.
  • If you are using Basic authentication and your app passwords are not enabled Nylas will not work. You can either:
    • Either enable app passwords
    • Enable Modern or OAuth authentication. Then set up OAuth for Office 365. Follow the steps in Create an Azure App.
  • During development, you might be asked to approve the Azure app if using OAuth or Modern Authentication.
  • If your Office 365 application has EWS scopes and we are not able to connect, we will fall back to use EAS. See How to Detect MDM Issues for EAS.
