How to Detect MDM Issues for EAS

Most email sync connections initiated since September 1, 2020, are performed over EWS, which is not subject to MDM policies.

Exchange and Office 365 accounts use mobile device management policies like Microsoft Intune. Nylas declares itself as a type of mobile device and can be blocked by mobile device management policies.

Nylas will identify itself as an iPhone, with a user-agent like python-EAS-Client 1.0 and there are 2 identical devices with this description.

Causes

If you see one of the following MDM quarantine notifications:

  • Your mobile device is temporarily blocked from accessing content via Exchange ActiveSync because the mobile device has been quarantined.
  • Your mobile device being quarantined, please contact your IS administrator. Your device is temporarily blocked from accessing content via Exchange ActiveSync...

Solutions

The end-user needs to contact their Exchange or Office 365 administrator to remove the device from quarantine or resolve the block.

  • When an Exchange account has synced only 2 emails, removing the quarantined devices will allow the usual sync to begin.
